A gift for a 4-year-old: play sets that grow with them
Around four, play changes fast. A set that can grow stays fun for longer. This is how to spot such sets, with examples from the manufacturers themselves.
The box first
Toys in the EU carry a CE mark, and toys with small parts warn that they are not suitable for children under 36 months. A four-year-old is past that line, but the age on the box is still the maker’s advice on difficulty.
If there are younger brothers or sisters at home, watch out for small parts too: they soon end up within everyone’s reach.
A theme that grows
Playmobil and Schleich sort their sets into themes. Playmobil Country is about life in the countryside, with sets such as a large farm, a rabbit hutch and a farm stand. Schleich Farm World centres on animals, stables and characters such as Farmer Paul and the vet Laura.
A first set in such a theme is a start: animals, buildings or vehicles from the same world can follow later. Keep the set number, and additions are easy to find.
Starter sets
Some brands make sets to begin with. Schleich’s Farm World starter set 72161 holds a horse, a calf, a cat and a puppy, and Schleich names ages 3 to 8 for it.
Such a set is small enough to see whether the theme catches on, and leaves plenty of room to add to later.
Building that grows
Geomag names ages 3 to 99 for its Classic range, and Connetix names 3 and up for its magnetic tiles. With more pieces the builds get bigger, while the basics stay the same.
Plus-Plus makes two sizes: Plus-Plus BIG with 50 by 30 mm pieces for children from 1, and the regular 20 by 12 mm pieces from 5. A child can move on to the small pieces later.
How to choose
Start with what the child enjoys now: animals, stories, vehicles or building. Then pick a set in that theme with a fitting age on the box.
