A play set as a gift: choosing by budget

Before you pick a budget

Ask two things first: how old is the child, and what do they love? Farm, horses, knights, dinosaurs, vehicles or building: every brand on ToySetFox is sorted by theme, so a favourite theme leads to the right shelf.

Then check the age marking on the set. For children under three, choose only toys made for that age; many play sets contain small parts.

Up to €15

In this budget you mostly find small sets: a single figure or animal, a small scene, a figure pack or a small building set. They work well as an extra, as a first taste of a brand or as an addition to a set the child already has.

A small set is also an easy way to see whether a theme catches on before you buy something bigger.

€15 to €30

Here sets grow into small scenes: a figure with a vehicle, an animal with its stable, a small building set. Enough to play with on its own, and a good base to add to later.

€30 to €60

In this range you find sets that stand on their own as a play world: a stable, a shop, a fire engine, a larger building set, often with several figures and accessories.

Look at what is in the box on the product page: the number of figures, animals and pieces tells you more than the size of the box.

From €60

The biggest boxes: large buildings such as castles, farms and houses, technical sets with motors and large display models. Check the size of the box and the space the set needs once it is built.

For a big present you can share the cost with family, or split it: the main set now and an extension later.

Check before you buy

Batteries: vehicles with light, sound or motors need them, and they are not always included. Series: some sets are part of a larger scene. Assembly: some sets take a while to put together, so plan it before the party.
